A new two-hander musical dramedy based on the real-life experiences of
Jill Morrell and John McCarthy.
The couple made headlines in 1986 when John, a British journalist, was kidnapped in war-torn Beirut.
Frustrated by government inaction, Jill resolved to raise awareness
and formed campaign group ‘The Friends Of John McCarthy’.
For more than five desperate years, McCarthy remained a hostage.
Placing sharp focus on the very human elements of their situation, the show goes on to imagine and explore events beyond a joyful reunion under an intense media spotlight and with the fairytale expectations of an enthralled public.
'This show will leave you with chills, shock, and admiration for how beautifully these artists have brought a difficult story to life with powerful acting and a compelling score. It brims with excellent songwriting, outstanding singing, well-paced dramatic moments and effective lighting.'
Fringe Review
'I particularly liked the concept of London Underground announcements introducing a new scene. The recurring refrains suggest a claustrophobic, sweaty, cramped commuter on their daily grind. This servitude counterposed the isolation of McCarthy in his foreign prison.
A light musical about a dark subject.'

'The book by Adrian Kimberlin is strong but it is in the musical numbers where his genius is most apparent. The title song is haunting with beautiful harmonies... A turbulent ride through one couple’s extraordinary relationship and a fascinating deconstruction of its collapse.'
Ed Fest Mag
'I particularly love the ballad where she (Jill Morrell) insists that she will not be dismissed as ‘the woman who waits’ - I have to confess to tearing up a little during that song. A sweet and engaging musical.'
Bouquets & Brickbats
'The actors bring a perfect balance of sensitivity, light-hearted humour and emotion as they perform a beautifully written script and songs. Adrian Kimberlin’s musical arrangements and lyrics deliver a wonderful piece of musical theatre.'
One4Review
'Kimberlin’s script and songs and (the) direction bring them (McCarthy and Morrell) a rich sense of personality... it’s a well-crafted spin on a very unusual love story.'

'What a wonderful piece of theatre. I loved every minute and can’t wait to see where this show goes. Amazing!'
'Emotional, surprising, and brilliantly performed with an excellent score.
It’s well acted and beautifully sung. I think its a future big hit.'
'Undoubtedly the best show I've seen at the Fringe this year!
An absolute delight, I was not expecting to be on such a roller coaster of emotions.'
'Human experience effortlessly told through songs.
Writing full of humour but with the tragedy never forgotten.
Is this destined for the West End? I wouldn’t be surprised.'
'Who would have thought this could ever work?
But it does! A beautifully delivered show with lovely harmonies and great storytelling.'
'For such a big story they found ways to keep the emotions personal and relatable.
I also felt there was a good balance of reverence for the darker subject matter while still finding flashes of humour and light.'
'Without doubt my favourite show. I definitely wasn't expecting it to be such a funny production with so interesting an approach to portraying the timeline of events.
It fully engages you from the outset and there are many laugh out loud moments. The soundtrack is superb! This show is full of incredible songs with strong narratives and beautiful melodies, there are no fillers here. Speaking as someone who goes to see a lot of West End musicals it seems perfect for a London run.'
'An absolute treat! Being born in 1993, I had no idea who they were. It sounds ‘doom and gloom ’but really, the dominating vibes of the piece are joy, love, victory, hope, and connection. This is all neatly wrapped up in a meta-story which I found great fun!
Adrian Kimberlin’s script is witty, natural and well written, and his musical score is absolutely gorgeous, I’m still humming snatches of tune now.'
'Deftly deals with the stresses of a relationship torn apart by a kidnap. Moving and funny, a must see! When I heard there was a musical about John McCarthy and Jill Morrell, I did wonder how it would work. But it does, it really does! In Adrian Kimberlin's hands this is a witty, beautifully crafted piece with moments that left me choking back the tears.
The set is simple, it doesn't need to be anything more, and the storytelling straightforward and clear for anyone who isn't familiar with the events of the time.
With complex harmonies, great music and lyrics, this is a show well worth seeing.'
'Often funny, often moving, and always beautiful to listen to, this is a fascinating production about a real but really difficult love story that many of us of a certain age will remember, and others will find themselves intrigued to know more about.'
'A fascinating true story that has been brought to life by this fabulous production.
Addressing themes of love, dedication, despair and reintegration make this an intriguing show. Highly recommended, I would love this show to come to Adelaide (my home town)
for the Adelaide Fringe Festival.'
'Funny and entertaining but also rich with emotion, the story had me riveted from beginning to end. Adrian Kimberlin is a talent to keep an eye on! 5/5 stars.'
